The apostle Paul called Timothy (and all Believers) to "watch your life and doctrine closely." Being vigilant to uphold the pure biblical doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ is crucially important, because it is the foundation of the life that's pleasing to the Lord--conduct flows from conviction, and conviction is determined by doctrine. And the scope of this call to hold fast to the gospel, and the life that flows from it, is eternal--"because if you do, you will save both yourselves and your hearers."

This message touches on some of the practical matters pertaining to the confession of sin. One of the struggles is our tendency to get hung up on contrition (sorrow over our guilt), and thus not take refuge in the mercy of Christ and His finished work (faith). But true repentance always includes both contrition and faith. We must confess our general sinfulness, as well as specific sin over which the Holy Spirit is bringing conviction. And we must confess to God above all, but also to those persons we have wronged by our sin. Repentance is composed of contrition and faith in Christ. And when the Holy Spirit is producing repentance in a sinner's heart through the Word of God, one of the fruits of that repentance will be confession of sin. David's confession in Psalm 32 reveals two elements in confession--full acknowledgment of the wretchedness of one's sin (and one's sinfulness), and total abandonment of all cover-ups. And when we are thus moved to confess to the Lord, we receive the joyous release of His forgiveness in Christ. We apologize for an error in recording. "Produce fruit in keeping with repentance." This statement of John the Baptist serves as the starting point of a new series at Helmar, on the theme of repentance. There is a roughness in repentance, because it involves being humbled and broken over our sin. But though it is a rough embrace, it IS an embrace nevertheless--a loving act of the God who desires intimate fellowship with us. Repentance is a work God does in a sinner's heart, by the power of His Spirit working through His Word. In the coming weeks, we will week to study the fruits of repentance. May God produce them in our lives more deeply and broadly, to the glory of Christ.

When Jesus was questioned as to why he'd stayed behind at the Temple and put Joseph and Mary through such emotional agony as they searched for Him for three days, Jesus showed no shame, remorse, or apology. He knew who He was, and what He had come to do, even at 12 years of age. And He would let nothing stop Him from doing what His Father had said was necessary--the work of accomplishing our salvation. We need to learn to discern, in our daily lives, the essential difference between what is necessary ("must"), and what is merely important ("should, can"). The specifics will vary--but we all must repent, trust in Christ, and obey His Word.

One of the names of the Christ who was born in Bethlehem--Jesus, God's own Son--is "Mighty God." The prophet Isaiah declared that the mighty One was was coming would come "robed in splendor, striding forth in the greatness of His strength...mighty to save." As Mighty God, Jesus utterly defeated sin, death and the devil through His death and resurrection! And thus by His coming He has split all humanity into two camps--the repentant (saved) and the unrepentant (lost). And so the message of Christmas is one of great urgency--"repent!" And also great joy for those who thus receive it.

Jesus Christ is the "Counselor," sent according to God's promise. He is the "counsel" of God, meaning that He was and is God's plan for providing salvation for lost and sinful mankind...a counsel/plan of divine love and grace that was established in eternity before He had even created us. And Jesus is also the all-knowing and all-wise "Counselor" who seeks to minister to us in every need and in every way. He sorts us out, He sets us straight, and He guides us into the pathways of what is true, right, and good. He is our Savior, and our truest Friend.
